Taylor Gray used strategy and patience to earn a hard-fought win Saturday night at Kansas Speedway, capturing the Kansas Lottery 300 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.
Gray made the decisive move during a long green-flag run, hitting pit road earlier than the leaders with 95 laps remaining. The call from crew chief Jason Ratcliff paid off, as Gray cycled to the front and never gave up the lead over the final stretch.
He held off a late charge from Sheldon Creed, who closed the gap in the closing laps but came up 0.718 seconds short. Justin Allgaier finished third, followed by Jesse Love and Brent Crews to round out the top five.
The win marked the second of Gray’s career and came after a frustrating start to the season despite showing strong speed week after week. Once out front, clean air and strong long-run pace helped him manage traffic and keep Creed at bay.
Creed still left Kansas with something to celebrate. By finishing ahead of the other eligible drivers, he secured his first $100,000 Dash 4 Cash bonus, adding a major boost to his night after starting from the rear of the field due to a pre-race inspection issue.
The race featured plenty of early chaos, including a violent crash involving Carson Kvapil just two laps into the event. His car went airborne and flipped down the backstretch before coming to rest upside down. Kvapil was able to climb out under his own power after safety crews righted the car.
Later in Stage 1, contact between teammates led to another incident when Jesse Love and Austin Hill battled for position, ending with Hill spinning and taking heavy damage.
Despite the action-filled race, the outcome came down to strategy and execution. Gray and his team made the right call at the right time, and it delivered a statement win as the season continues to take shape.
