Magnussen To Make NASCAR Debut in Trackhouse’s PROJECT91 Entry in San Diego

Kevin Magnussen is set to take on a completely new challenge later this month as he makes his NASCAR Cup Series debut with Trackhouse Racing’s PROJECT91 entry at the inaugural San Diego street race.

The Danish driver, best known for his long Formula 1 career, will compete in the June 19-21 event at the Coronado Naval Base circuit, bringing global attention to one of NASCAR’s newest international showcase weekends.

Trackhouse Racing confirmed that Qualcomm will support the effort, marking another high-profile partnership for the PROJECT91 program, which is designed to bring world-class drivers from outside NASCAR into the Cup Series.

For Magnussen, the opportunity represents both excitement and respect for the challenge ahead.

“I’m incredibly excited and honored to have the opportunity to compete in NASCAR,” Magnussen said. “What Justin Marks and Trackhouse have done with PROJECT91 is unique. To provide drivers from outside of the NASCAR world with a chance to compete at this level. I’m proud to have this opportunity.”

Magnussen is no stranger to top-level motorsport. He made 185 Formula 1 starts across two separate stints in the series and currently competes in the FIA World Endurance Championship with BMW M Team WRT, along with select IMSA appearances. He has also previously made a start in IndyCar, adding to his wide-ranging résumé across global racing disciplines.

Now, he will add NASCAR to that list.

Before his debut, Magnussen has already begun preparing with Trackhouse at their North Carolina base, going through seat fittings, pit stop procedures, and race weekend preparations. He said the process has given him a deeper appreciation for the complexity of NASCAR competition.

“They’re an awesome group of people, incredibly dedicated, and just as excited about this debut as I am,” he said. “I really can’t wait to get to San Diego and experience it all for the first time.”

Magnussen will join a fourth Trackhouse entry alongside Ross Chastain, Shane van Gisbergen, and rookie Connor Zilisch. Phil Surgen will serve as crew chief for the special entry, returning to the pit box after stepping away from full-time competition earlier this season.

Trackhouse owner Justin Marks said the combination of driver, event, and partner made this the right moment to revive the PROJECT91 program.

“We were waiting for the right opportunity with the right partner and driver to bring this PROJECT91 entry to fruition,” Marks said. “Qualcomm is a worldwide brand, and Kevin Magnussen is a global driver, and both are elements we look for when it comes to running PROJECT91.”

PROJECT91 has already proven its impact since its debut in 2022, including a landmark win when Shane van Gisbergen scored a victory in his NASCAR debut on the streets of Chicago in 2023.

Now, Magnussen will try to follow in that same spirit, stepping into a stock car for the first time on a street circuit designed to test both precision and adaptability.

As NASCAR continues to expand its international reach, San Diego will serve as another high-profile stage for crossover talent. For Magnussen, it is a chance to start a completely new chapter in a career already defined by versatility.
