Connor Zilisch bounced back in a big way Saturday night, using strategy and track position to win the Suburban Propane 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway.
The 19-year-old stayed out on older tires with 28 laps remaining after a bold call from crew chief Rodney Childers. That decision proved to be the difference, as Zilisch held off a late charge from Kyle Larson to secure the win.
Larson controlled much of the race, leading 230 of the 300 laps and sweeping both stages. However, the late caution cycles shuffled the field and opened the door for Zilisch, who capitalized on clean air and strong track position to stay out front.
The victory marked Zilisch’s first short track win, his first of the season, and the 12th of his career in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. It also came at a crucial time, as the young driver has faced recent struggles while competing at the Cup level.
Behind Zilisch and Larson, Brent Crews finished third after making the same tire strategy call. Justin Allgaier and Carson Kvapil rounded out the top five, giving JR Motorsports four cars inside the top five.
A late restart with 11 laps to go set up a tense battle for the lead. Larson briefly closed in but lost momentum after his car tightened up in the closing laps. That allowed Zilisch to pull away just enough to take the checkered flag by 0.703 seconds.
The race featured multiple cautions and dramatic moments, including an engine failure and fire for Mason Maggio that brought out a red flag. Even with the chaos, Zilisch kept his composure and executed when it mattered most.
For Zilisch, the win was more than just another trophy. It was a reminder of what he is capable of when everything comes together.
