Hunter Lawrence Grabs Championship Momentum in Denver, Setting Up Supercross Finale Showdown

Round 16 of the 2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship brought the title fight to a boiling point at Empower Field at Mile High. With just one race left, Hunter Lawrence delivered a dominant performance to swing momentum in his favor and set up a winner-take-all battle with Ken Roczen.

Lawrence Delivers When It Matters Most

The 450SMX Main Event started with Jorge Prado grabbing the holeshot, with Lawrence and hometown rider Eli Tomacclose behind.

Lawrence wasted no time. He took the lead on lap two and quickly built a gap. Behind him, Roczen pushed forward, passing Cooper Webb and then Prado to move into second.

At one point, Roczen was about four seconds back, but Lawrence kept pulling away. By the halfway mark, the gap had grown to nearly ten seconds. From there, Lawrence stayed smooth and in control.

He crossed the line 13.2 seconds ahead of Roczen to earn his fifth win of the season.

“It couldn’t have been much better than that,” Lawrence said. “Let’s go to Salt Lake.”

Title Fight Comes Down to One Race

Roczen finished second and kept the red plate, but just barely. Only one point separates him and Lawrence heading into the final round.

Both riders have five wins and 12 podiums this season. This will be their first time battling head-to-head for a Supercross title in the final race.

Webb, who came into the race still in the hunt, crashed late and finished 11th. That result officially knocked him out of championship contention.

Tomac Returns to the Podium

Tomac gave the Denver crowd something to cheer about. After an early mistake, he fought back through the field to finish third.

It marked the 111th podium of his career, tying him with Jeremy McGrath for second all-time in Supercross history.

“I’m just glad to be back,” Tomac said. “It was a good bounce back.”

Deegan Stays Dominant in 250 West

In the Western Divisional 250SMX Class, Haiden Deegan continued his incredible season.

Fresh off locking up the championship, Deegan took control early and never looked back. He led every lap and secured his seventh win of the season.

Levi Kitchen finished second, with Ryder DiFrancesco in third.

Deegan now holds 14 career wins, moving him to third on the all-time 250SMX wins list. His success has also helped Yamaha set a new single-season record with 15 wins in the class.

Final Thoughts

Everything now comes down to Salt Lake City.

Lawrence has the momentum.
Roczen has the points lead.

One race will decide the 2026 Supercross champion.
