Alex Bowman Ends 80-Race Drought with Victory in Rain-Shortened Chicago Street Race

In a dramatic turn of events on the streets of Chicago, Alex Bowman claimed victory in the Grant Park 165, ending an 80-race winless streak and securing his spot in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.

The race, shortened from 75 to 58 laps due to rain delays, saw Bowman’s crew chief Blake Harris make a crucial strategic call. Keeping Bowman out on wet tires after the final caution proved to be the winning move.

“The last time we won, we didn’t really get to celebrate—we’re going to drink so much damn bourbon tonight,” an elated Bowman declared post-race, hinting at a robust celebration to come.

Bowman, driving the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, secured his eighth career victory with a pass on Joey Hand on Lap 51. He held off runner-up Tyler Reddick in the closing laps, crossing the finish line with a 3.447-second lead.

The race was marked by challenging conditions, with drivers navigating a wet-and-dry 2.2-mile, 12-turn course. Several contenders faced misfortune, including defending winner Shane van Gisbergen, who was knocked out early after contact with Chase Briscoe.

Key moments included a red-flag period lasting nearly two hours due to heavy rain and pole-sitter Kyle Larson’s race-ending crash on Lap 34.

Ty Gibbs finished third, followed by Joey Hand and Michael McDowell rounding out the top five.

This victory marks a significant comeback for Bowman, who had struggled following injuries including a back injury and a brain injury. “I didn’t… you start to second-guess if you’re ever going to get a chance to win a race again,” Bowman reflected.

Despite the shortened format, the Chicago Street Race maintained its festival atmosphere, showcasing NASCAR’s ability to captivate audiences in urban settings.

As the Cup Series heads to Pocono Raceway, Bowman’s victory adds an intriguing storyline to the playoff picture, proving that in NASCAR, fortunes can change as quickly as Chicago’s weather.
