Pit Strategy Call Delivers Victory for Chase Elliott at Martinsville Speedway

Chase Elliott and Hendrick Motorsports delivered a strategy-driven victory Sunday at Martinsville Speedway, capturing the Cook Out 400 and giving Chevrolet its first win of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season.

The difference came on pit road. Elliott and crew chief Alan Gustafson made a key short-pit call on lap 261, gaining valuable track position. From there, Elliott took control following a restart with 68 laps to go and never gave it up, holding off Denny Hamlin by just over half a second at the finish.

The win marked Elliott’s 22nd career victory and added to Hendrick Motorsports’ impressive record at Martinsville, now sitting at 31 all-time wins.

Strategy Beats Dominance

While Elliott celebrated in victory lane, the race told a different story for Hamlin. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver was dominant for most of the afternoon, leading 292 of the 400 laps and sweeping both stages.

For much of the race, Hamlin appeared untouchable. However, the late-race restart shuffled the order, and he was never able to regain control from Elliott. Navigating through lapped traffic in the closing laps, Hamlin stayed close but could not mount a serious challenge for the lead.

Strong Runs Across the Field

Joey Logano bounced back from a tough week at Darlington to finish third for Team Penske, matching his best result of the season. Logano noted that clean air played a major role, believing his car had similar speed to the race winner.

Ty Gibbs continued his consistent stretch with a fourth-place finish, marking his fifth straight top-six result and his first top-10 at Martinsville. Elliott’s teammate William Byron rounded out the top five after leading a handful of laps earlier in the race.

The rest of the top ten included Ryan Blaney, Christopher Bell, Austin Cindric, Kyle Larson, and Josh Berry.

Points Picture and Setbacks

Despite finishing 15th, Tyler Reddick continues to control the championship standings with a sizable lead over the field. However, his teammate Bubba Wallace had a difficult day, finishing 36th after being involved in a multi-car accident that impacted both his race and his position in the standings.

A Break Before Bristol

The Cup Series now heads into its first off-week of the season before returning to action at Bristol Motor Speedway. With momentum on Elliott’s side and several contenders showing speed, the next stretch of races is shaping up to be highly competitive.

At Martinsville, it was not just about having the fastest car. It was about making the right call at the right time, and Elliott and his team executed when it mattered most.
