Corey Heim proved once again that the truck may change, but the result stays the same. Driving the No. 5 TRICON Garage Toyota on a part-time schedule, Heim pulled off a stunning last-lap pass to win the Buckle Up South Carolina 200 at Darlington Raceway. The victory marked his second straight win at the track and the 24th of his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series career.
After dominating last season with 12 wins in the No. 11 truck, Heim returned to Victory Lane in a different ride, using strategy and fresh tires to his advantage. Late in the race, with only a few laps remaining in regulation, Heim made a bold decision to pit for slightly fresher tires. That call dropped him deep in the field for overtime, but it set him up for a dramatic finish.
On the first overtime restart, Heim moved from 15th to ninth before another caution reset the field. With one more chance, he used his tire advantage to slice through traffic. Entering the final lap, Heim went three wide and charged into Turn 3, catching race leader Ross Chastain off guard. Chastain left the bottom lane open, and Heim took full advantage, completing the pass in the final corners to win by just .145 seconds.
Chastain, who led 35 laps and controlled both overtime restarts, appeared to have the race secured before Heim’s late move. The near upset left him searching for answers after the finish.
Kaden Honeycutt had a strong night as well, winning the pole and leading a race-high 59 laps. However, a decision to restart in the outside lane during overtime hurt his chances, and he fell back to fourth by the finish. Christian Eckes took third, while Connor Mosack completed the top five.
The win also earned Heim a $50,000 bonus in the Triple Truck Challenge. If he competes at Rockingham Speedway on April 3 and wins again, he will have a chance to collect an even larger prize.
Despite finishing 17th, Chandler Smith left Darlington with a solid lead in the series standings over Honeycutt. The race featured 14 lead changes among eight drivers and nine caution flags, showing just how unpredictable the night became before Heim’s incredible final move sealed the victory.
