Alex Palou did not waste any time reminding the INDYCAR world why he is the sport’s reigning champion.
After a historic 2025 season that saw him win his third straight championship, Palou opened the 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season with a dominant victory at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Driving for Chip Ganassi Racing, Palou controlled the race when it mattered most and pulled away for a convincing win that sent a clear message to the rest of the field.
The victory was the 20th of Palou’s career, and he reached that milestone in just his 99th start. That kind of success so early in his career puts him in rare company and shows no signs of slowing down.
Palou started fourth but quickly put himself in position to challenge for the lead. The turning point came during the first round of pit stops when Palou and his team made a smart strategic decision. Instead of pitting at the same time as leader Scott McLaughlin, Palou stayed out longer in what is known as an overcut strategy. That decision allowed him to cycle back into the lead once the pit stops were complete.
From there, the race belonged to Palou.
He led 59 of the 100 laps and showed complete control on the tight and demanding street circuit. Even when competitors used faster alternate tires late in the race, Palou remained calm and continued to extend his lead. His advantage at the finish was more than 12 seconds, the largest winning margin in the history of the St. Petersburg event.
It was not just the win itself that stood out. It was how easy Palou made it look.
While other drivers struggled to find the right balance between tire strategy and speed, Palou and his team made all the right calls. His ability to manage his tires, maintain consistent lap times, and avoid mistakes showed why he has become the standard in INDYCAR.
Scott McLaughlin finished second after starting from the pole position, but he never had an answer for Palou’s pace once the Ganassi driver took control. Christian Lundgaard completed an impressive drive from 12th to finish third, earning a well deserved podium finish.
Kyle Kirkwood and Pato O’Ward rounded out the top five, but neither was able to seriously challenge for the win.
Palou’s dominance should not come as a surprise. Last season, he won the championship by an incredible 196 point margin, one of the largest advantages in recent history. He and Chip Ganassi Racing have built a combination that is both fast and consistent, which is often the key to winning championships.
What makes Palou especially dangerous is his complete approach to racing. He is fast when he needs to be, but he is also patient and smart. He understands race strategy and works closely with his team to make the right decisions. That combination makes him extremely difficult to beat.
With the season just beginning, there is still plenty of racing ahead. Drivers like McLaughlin, Josef Newgarden, and Pato O’Ward will look to challenge Palou as the year continues. But if the season opener is any indication, Palou remains the driver everyone else is chasing.
For now, the message is clear.
The champion is still in control, and Alex Palou is not going anywhere.
