The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing announced today that RJ Hampshire will join Team USA for the 2025 FIM Motocross of Nations, stepping into the open-class slot left vacant by Chase Sexton following his crash in Las Vegas. The reshuffle also places Eli Tomac in the MXGP class, while Haiden Deegan retains his MX2 position despite his own recent injury.
Sexton’s withdrawal created a major shakeup for Team USA, which is set to compete October 3-5 at Ironman Raceway in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Hampshire, who captured the 2024 AMA Supercross 250SX West title and finished fifth in the 2025 AMA Pro Motocross 450 standings, will now bring his speed and experience into the international spotlight.
“I’m really excited to get the chance to race for Team USA again,” Hampshire said. “It’s an honor I’ll never take for granted. Even if I wasn’t the first pick, I’ll always answer the call and give it everything I’ve got. Ironman is one of my favorite tracks, and I’m fired up to battle in the front with this team!”
Deegan’s inclusion remains one of the storylines of the event. The 19-year-old broke his collarbone in a collision with Jo Shimoda in Las Vegas but underwent surgery Monday to have the injury plated. He is expected to attempt riding this week in hopes of being ready by race weekend. Should he be unable to compete, his Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing teammate Justin Cooper has been named the backup.
AMA Director of Racing Mike Pelletier praised both Hampshire and Cooper for their dedication:
“We’re deeply grateful to R.J. for stepping in at such short notice. His commitment and professionalism are outstanding,” Pelletier said. “I would also like to recognize Justin Cooper for his unwavering dedication. He continues to train at the highest level, ready to support his countrymen if needed. That speaks volumes about his character and commitment.”
For Hampshire, the selection marks his second MXoN appearance after competing in 2023 at Ernée, France. Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing expressed pride in his call-up. Team Manager Nathan Ramsey emphasized, “RJ is a perfect choice to represent the USA, as well as our team. He’ll give it everything he has, and we’re more than happy to support him and Team USA.”
The United States will aim for its 24th overall Motocross of Nations victory and its second on home soil in the past three years, having last captured the Chamberlain Trophy in 2022 at RedBud. With Tomac, Deegan, and Hampshire carrying the stars and stripes into Ironman, expectations remain high despite the turbulence of the past week.
