Corey Heim Wins Wild NASCAR Truck Race at Watkins Glen

Corey Heim drove his Toyota truck to victory in a crazy finish at Watkins Glen International in New York on Friday night. The 23-year-old from Georgia won his fourth straight road course race in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

The race ended in triple overtime, which means NASCAR had to extend the race three times to get a green flag finish. Heim held off Daniel Hemric and rookie Giovanni Ruggiero to win by just 0.202 seconds as darkness was falling.

This victory makes Heim the youngest driver ever to win 17 races in the truck series. He started the race from pole position, which is the front spot on the starting grid. It was his second win from pole this season.

“Just never give up,” Heim said after the race. “I got behind in that last stage and was scratching and clawing trying to get back through the field.”

The race was not easy for Heim. He had to come back from 11th place late in the race, and his brakes almost completely failed during a long green flag run. Despite these problems, he managed to lead 44 laps total and take the win.

The race started out calm and clean, but things got wild toward the end. Multiple crashes forced six caution periods and led to the three overtime restarts that decided the winner.

Christopher Bell, a NASCAR Cup Series driver, looked like he might win for most of the final laps. Bell was driving for Stewart Friesen’s team because Friesen was injured in a dirt track crash the week before. Bell was trying to save fuel and was leading with one lap to go when another caution came out. The multiple overtimes forced him to pit for more fuel, and he finished fourth.

The race had a big impact on the championship race. With only one regular season race left, drivers are fighting for the final playoff spots.

Before the race, Ty Majeski and Jake Garcia were 16 points ahead of Ben Rhodes for the 10th and final playoff position. Rhodes won the second stage of the race but crashed later and finished 26th. Garcia now leads Rhodes by 11 points going into the final race at Richmond next Saturday.

Stewart Friesen, who won earlier this season at Michigan to earn a playoff spot, might still make the playoffs even though he missed this race due to injury. He can ask NASCAR for a medical waiver to keep his playoff position.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will finish the regular season next Friday night at Richmond Raceway in Virginia. The race is called the Eero 250 and starts at 7:30 p.m. ET on FS1.

Ty Majeski won at Richmond last year, so he will be looking to repeat. But with Corey Heim leading the championship points and driving so well on road courses, all eyes will be on how the playoff picture shapes up.

The top 10 finishers at Watkins Glen were: Corey Heim, Daniel Hemric, Giovanni Ruggiero, Christopher Bell, Tyler Ankrum, Sammy Smith, Ty Majeski, Connor Zilisch, Matt Mills, and Layne Riggs.
