Connor Zilisch is recovering after undergoing surgery to repair a broken collarbone he suffered on Saturday at Watkins Glen.
In a post on social media, the 19-year-old driver shared, “Wanted to give everyone a quick update. Had surgery on my collarbone this morning to get a plate and screws to help with the healing process. Been a tough few days for me mentally, but all the love you guys have shown has certainly helped. Thank you.”
The injury happened after Zilisch won his race in the JR Motorsports Chevrolet. While celebrating in victory lane, he slipped off the door of his car and fell. His left leg and ankle appeared to get caught in the window net during the fall. Fortunately, the collarbone injury was the only one he suffered.
Track medical staff placed Zilisch on a backboard and transported him from victory lane. He was later taken to a local hospital and released the same night.
The injury kept Zilisch out of Sunday’s Cup Series race at Watkins Glen, which was his final scheduled Cup start of the season. JR Motorsports has not yet announced if the injury will cause him to miss any upcoming Xfinity Series events. The series is off this weekend and will return on August 22 at Daytona International Speedway. Three races remain in the regular season.
Zilisch currently leads the Xfinity Series with six victories and holds the top spot in the championship standings. He is seven points ahead of teammate Justin Allgaier and 24 points ahead of Sam Mayer from the Haas Factory Team.
