Stewart Friesen Injured in Violent Dirt Modified Crash in Quebec

As of Tuesday evening, Stewart Friesen continues to be in serious but stable condition and will be transferred to a hospital in New York on Wednesday, Jessica Friesen announced on Social Media.

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Stewart Friesen was injured Monday evening in a terrifying crash during a Super DIRTcar Series event at Autodrome Drummond in Drummondville, Quebec. The wreck occurred when Friesen’s No. 44 dirt modified car jumped the cushion at the end of the backstretch, flipped violently over the retaining wall, and burst into flames after multiple barrel rolls.

According to a social media update attributed to his wife, Jessica Friesen, Stewart suffered fractures to his pelvis and right leg that will require surgery. He was moved to a larger hospital for the procedures. Despite the severity of the crash, Friesen was reported to be alert and communicating with safety personnel before being extracted from the car and transported to a nearby hospital.

Jessica expressed gratitude to those who responded, saying, “Thank you to the manufacturers who have made dirt modifieds as safe as possible, and to the track crew for their patience and hard work getting Stew out of the car.”

The incident occurred just days after Friesen celebrated his 52nd Super DIRTcar Series win at Weedsport Speedway in New York. On Monday, before the crash, he had set the fastest time in qualifying and won his heat race.

Friesen, a veteran of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series since 2016, currently drives the No. 52 Toyota for Halmar Friesen Racing. He scored his most recent Truck Series win in June at Michigan International Speedway, securing a provisional spot in the playoffs. However, his 200th career Truck start ended in controversy Friday at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, where he was disqualified after finishing third due to a height infraction. The team is appealing that penalty.

As Friesen begins his road to recovery, it is unclear how long he will be sidelined from both dirt and NASCAR competition.
