Austin Hill Suspended One Race After On-Track Incident with Aric Almirola at Indianapolis

Austin Hill has been suspended for one NASCAR Xfinity Series race following an on-track incident with Aric Almirola during Saturday’s event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Hill will miss the upcoming race at Iowa Speedway on August 2. In his absence, veteran driver Austin Dillon will pilot the No. 21 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing (RCR).

The penalty comes after Hill intentionally hooked Almirola in the right rear during Turn 4 on lap 91. The move was a retaliation after Almirola made contact with Hill entering Turn 3. The resulting crash sent Almirola hard into the outside wall. Hill was parked for five laps by NASCAR officials during the race as immediate discipline.

RCR has announced that it will not appeal the penalty.

With the suspension, Hill will require a waiver to remain eligible for the Xfinity Series postseason. If NASCAR grants that waiver, Hill will forfeit his 21 existing playoff points under a new rule implemented before the season, which stipulates that drivers granted waivers for non-medical reasons lose all playoff points. Additionally, Hill will not be able to earn more playoff points before the playoffs begin.

In other penalties announced Tuesday, NASCAR issued two-race suspensions to two crew members of the No. 43 Legacy Motor Club team in the NASCAR Cup Series. The suspensions follow a right front wheel detachment on Erik Jones’ car during lap 90 of the Brickyard 400. Jackman Kellen Mills and front tire changer Josh Rosselli will both miss the next two Cup Series events at Iowa Speedway and Watkins Glen.

The penalties mark a significant shakeup as both series prepare for critical mid-summer races with playoff implications.
