The penultimate round of the 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship delivered high-altitude drama at Empower Field at Mile High this past weekend, with Chase Sexton scoring a commanding victory in the 450SX class and Haiden Deegan clinching his first 250SX Western Division Championship in a race that will be talked about for years to come.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Chase Sexton put on a masterclass performance in Denver, stretching his lead to over 10 seconds on the field to claim his sixth victory of the 2025 season. The win significantly tightened the championship battle, leaving Sexton just nine points behind Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Cooper Webb heading into next weekend’s season finale in Salt Lake City.
“I was a little fired up,” Sexton admitted in his post-race interview, referencing an early-race incident with Webb. “He crossed on me pretty hard on the start, almost took me out. I was kind of seeing red after that.”
Sexton’s aggressive pass on Webb early in the race set the tone for his dominant performance as he quickly pulled away from the field.
Webb, despite fighting illness, managed to hold on to second place under intense pressure from his teammate Justin Cooper and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Malcolm Stewart in the closing laps. The trio provided some of the night’s most exciting racing as they navigated through lapped traffic in the race’s final minutes.
“I was holding on for dear life at the end,” Webb confessed. “Two and three for the team is awesome, and we’ll carry this little bit of a lead going into Salt Lake and do what we need to do.”
Cooper’s third-place finish was particularly impressive considering his 12th place start. “This track’s really tough to pass on, so I just put my head down, was clicking off consistent laps, didn’t make too many mistakes, and had a good flow,” Cooper explained.
The night’s biggest storyline came in the 250SX Western Division, where Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Haiden Deegan secured his first Supercross championship in dramatic—and controversial—fashion.
Entering the night with a 17-point advantage over teammate Cole Davies, Deegan needed to finish ahead of Davies or limit the damage to maintain his points lead heading into the finale. Davies grabbed the holeshot and appeared to have the speed to secure his third consecutive win, but Deegan steadily reeled him in as the race progressed.
With just two laps remaining, Deegan made an aggressive pass that sent Davies over a berm and off the track. Davies remounted in fifth place, where he would finish, effectively handing the championship to Deegan regardless of the outcome at next weekend’s East/West Showdown.
“Two laps to go, I wanted that win, baby. I was going to do anything for it,” said an exuberant Deegan after the race. “This championship means a lot to me because people doubted me all the way. They were telling me I was all hype coming into Supercross and motocross. They’re just mad that I’m him and they’ve got to deal with it.”
Davies, displaying remarkable sportsmanship despite the circumstances, took responsibility for the incident. “I got a good start and was focusing on just trying to build a bit of a gap and ride from there, but I got caught up with some lappers,” Davies explained. “I shouldn’t have put myself in that position, to be honest. I could’ve been better in that department. But I’ll be back.”
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Julien Beaumer took second place after starting eighth, while Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Garrett Marchbanks rounded out the podium after starting ninth.
The 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship will conclude next Saturday night at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, where Webb and Sexton will battle for the 450SX crown. The event will also feature the Dave Coombs Sr. 250SX Class East/West Showdown, bringing together the best riders from both regional divisions.
With just nine points separating the championship contenders and the altitude of Salt Lake City presenting similar challenges to Denver, fans can expect another thrilling night of racing to cap off what has been an incredible season of Supercross.
Fans can catch all the action live on Peacock starting at 7:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 10th, with encore presentations available on NBC and CNBC.
