NASCAR Hands Down Major Penalty to Joe Gibbs Racing After Daytona 500

NASCAR has issued severe penalties to Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 19 team following post-race inspection of Chase Briscoe’s Toyota from the Daytona 500. The L2-level infractions, discovered at NASCAR’s R&D Center in Concord, North Carolina, centered around unauthorized modifications to the car’s spoiler base, a single-source vendor part that cannot be altered.

The penalties are substantial: Briscoe loses 100 driver points and 10 playoff points, while Joe Gibbs Racing faces a $100,000 fine along with the deduction of 100 owner points and 10 playoff points. Additionally, crew chief James Small received a four-race suspension for the violations, which breached Sections 14.1 and 14.5.8 of the NASCAR Rule Book.

In separate actions, NASCAR also penalized Front Row Motorsports’ No. 34 team and Rick Ware Racing’s No. 51 team for safety violations related to improper ballast in their vehicles. Both Todd Gilliland and Cody Ware, along with their respective teams, were docked 10 points each.

The severity of the penalties, particularly to the JGR team, underscores NASCAR’s strict enforcement of Next Gen car regulations, especially regarding single-source vendor parts.
