This Week In SuperMotocross: Round 2 – San Diego

The SuperMotocross series moves to historic San Diego for Round 2, where both classes feature compelling narratives after an action-packed season opener in Anaheim.

In the 450 class, Chase Sexton’s dominant Anaheim 1 victory marked his 10th career win, placing him alongside legends Mike LaRocco, Marvin Musquin, and Broc Glover on the all-time wins list. The win also represented KTM’s third 450SX season opener victory, following Ken Roczen (2014) and Musquin (2018).

Speaking of Roczen, his runner-up finish at A1 etched his name in the record books as just the ninth rider to achieve 70 450SX Class podiums. The result also gave Suzuki its first season-opening podium since Roczen’s victory a decade ago. Jason Anderson rounded out the podium, marking his first season-opening podium since 2018.

San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium, hosting just its third SuperMotocross event, has quickly become part of the sport’s rich history. The venue follows the legacy of San Diego Stadium/Jack Murphy Stadium/Qualcomm Stadium (31 rounds) and PETCO Park (8 rounds). Historically, winning in San Diego has proven significant – the winner has gone on to claim the 450SX championship 41% of the time.

In the 250 class, Jo Shimoda carries the red plate to San Diego after securing his third career 250SX victory at Anaheim 1. The Honda rider looks to continue his momentum at a track where he’s previously finished fourth and fifth. Julien Beaumer, fresh off his first career podium, aims to join the elite group of just 173 riders with multiple 250SX podiums.

The veterans aren’t to be overlooked, as Jordon Smith’s A1 podium moved him to third all-time in 250SX Class podiums with 25, while marking his 125th career SMX start.

As the series heads to its 42nd San Diego event, both classes are poised for intense battles at a venue that has consistently produced memorable moments in SuperMotocross history.
