In a remarkable weekend for NASCAR’s next generation, 22-year-old Layne Riggs secured his first NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series victory at the historic Milwaukee Mile. The win came in the Playoff-opening LiUNA! 175, just a day after Harrison Burton’s breakthrough NASCAR Cup Series win at Daytona.
Riggs, son of former NASCAR competitor Scott Riggs, showcased impressive skill and determination, taking the lead from Ty Majeski with 53 laps to go and maintaining it to the checkered flag. His 1.547-second victory over a field of motivated Playoff drivers underscored the young rookie’s talent.
“I don’t even know how to describe it,” an emotional Riggs said post-race. Despite a challenging rookie season, Riggs’ confidence in his truck’s performance during practice proved well-founded. His exuberant celebration even resulted in a dislocated shoulder, which he brushed off, stating, “It was worth it.”
The race saw intense competition among Playoff contenders, with eight of the top nine finishers being championship hopefuls. Ty Majeski, the pole-sitter and defending race winner, finished second, while Christian Eckes, who led a race-high 71 laps, came in third.
The victory reshuffles the Playoff standings, with Eckes now leading Majeski by 16 points. The championship battle remains tight, with only four points separating the final Playoff advancement position.
Riggs’ win in the No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford, coming in just his 23rd series start, not only marks a personal milestone but also continues a weekend trend of second-generation drivers finding success. It serves as a testament to the emerging talent in NASCAR and the enduring legacy of racing families.
The Truck Series Playoffs continue with the next round at Bristol Motor Speedway on September 19, where the championship contenders will face their next challenge in the pursuit of the title.
