Austin Dillon Clinches Playoff Spot with Dramatic Richmond Win

Austin Dillon secured his place in the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs with a thrilling victory at Richmond Raceway on Sunday evening. The dramatic win, which came in NASCAR Overtime, made Dillon the 13th different winner of the season.

Dillon, driving the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, led for the final 30 laps after passing Denny Hamlin. However, a late caution with two laps remaining, caused by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. spinning Ryan Preece, set up an overtime finish.

Joey Logano took the lead on the overtime restart, but Dillon made a bold move in the final corner, spinning Logano’s No. 22 Team Penske Ford. Dillon then made contact with Hamlin off Turn 4, crossing the finish line first to claim victory.

This marks Dillon’s fifth career win and his first since 2022. His resume now includes victories in the prestigious Coca-Cola 600 and Daytona 500, alongside this Richmond triumph.

Denny Hamlin, Tyler Reddick, Bubba Wallace, and Ross Chastain completed the top five finishers.

The race saw disappointment for Martin Truex Jr., who entered the event 13th in playoff standings. Truex suffered an engine failure early in the Final Stage, resulting in a last-place finish in what was his final full-time Cup race at Richmond.

The Cup Series continues next Sunday at Michigan International Speedway.
