New Zealander Shane van Gisbergen continued his impressive debut in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, winning Saturday’s Zip Buy Now, Pay Later 250 at Sonoma Raceway just one week after his first career victory. The 35-year-old van Gisbergen led a race-high 32 laps and took the lead from Austin Hill on a restart with 11 laps to go to take the checkered flag.
Van Gisbergen and Hill made contact battling for the lead after the final restart, with van Gisbergen powering ahead as Hill fell back to 5th. The two have had run-ins at road courses before, colliding while fighting for the win at Circuit of the Americas in March.
“Man, what a race – an adventure up and down all day,” said van Gisbergen. “That last restart I was just giving it all I had and two guys going for the same real estate came together. It was pretty awesome though, a lot of fun.”
Hill was frustrated but took “the high road”, saying “I plead the fifth, I’m not going to say anything about it. We’ll just go on to the next one, good hard racing.”
Sheldon Creed finished 2nd for his 9th career Xfinity runner-up result. Sam Mayer, rookie Austin Green, and Hill rounded out the top 5.
With his back-to-back road course wins, van Gisbergen has quickly taken to stock car racing after a successful career in Supercars in Australia. He dreamed of one day winning on an oval track after conquering road courses.
Championship leader Cole Custer maintained a 12-point advantage over Hill and Chandler Smith with an 8th place finish. The Xfinity Series heads to Iowa Speedway’s short oval next weekend.
