New Zealander Shane Van Gisbergen scored his first career NASCAR Xfinity Series victory with a late charge to the front in Saturday’s Pacific Office Automation 147 at Portland International Raceway.
The 35-year-old series rookie passed Justin Allgaier for the lead on a restart with four laps remaining and pulled away to a 0.941-second win over the veteran driver. Van Gisbergen celebrated wildly with a burnout, climbing out of his car, and kicking a rugby ball into the crowd.
“What a day, really cool, had some great racing,” said Van Gisbergen, who had to overcome some early restarts issues. “I need to get better on my restarts and learn how to position, but that was so much fun. Really cool racing. I love these cars, they’re great.”
Allgaier was the dominant driver for much of the day, leading a race-high 46 laps and sweeping both stages. However, the late restarts allowed Van Gisbergen to close in and make the winning pass for his first Xfinity win.
“I don’t know [what I could have done differently],” a dejected Allgaier said. “On those restarts we were so free taking off and the car was just struggling to get grip.”
Sam Mayer finished third, followed by SVG’s teammate AJ Allmendinger in fourth and IndyCar/IMSA veteran Ed Jones taking an impressive fifth place.
With his sixth-place result, Cole Custer took over the Xfinity Series points lead by 18 markers over Austin Hill and Chandler Smith, whose car suffered a late engine failure.
The series now heads to Sonoma Raceway next Saturday for the Zip Buy Now, Pay Later 250 on the California road course.
