Christopher Bell scored his second NASCAR Cup Series win of the season by taking the checkered flag in the rain-shortened Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday. Bell led a race-high 90 laps and won the second stage before weather became a major factor.
The decisive moment came after a restart on lap 236 when Bell held off Brad Keselowski for the lead as rain and lightning moved into the area. Just a few laps later, NASCAR was forced to display the caution flag for the dangerous weather conditions.
Efforts were made to dry the track, but persistent heavy rain and humidity made continuing the race impossible. NASCAR called the race official on lap 249, handing Bell his first career Cup win at the 1.5-mile Charlotte oval (Eight overall).
“It feels so good to just have a great race,” said Bell. “We led laps, passed cars, lost the lead at times but drove back to the front. This was a total team effort and hopefully we can build on this momentum.”
Keselowski, who finished runner-up, felt he had the fastest car but ran out of time as the rain arrived. William Byron came home third, followed by Tyler Reddick and Denny Hamlin rounding out the top five.
Pole sitter Ty Gibbs led 74 laps early but faded to sixth at the checkers. Chase Elliott, Ross Chastain, Alex Bowman and Josh Berry completed the top 10.
Defending race winner Ryan Blaney’s hopes ended after he slammed the outside wall on lap 143 due to a cut tire. Kyle Larson also never got on track as the driver who finished 18th at the Indianapolis 500 earlier in the day missed his opportunity to relief Justin Allgaier, who started the 600 for him.
