Denny Hamlin Looks to Keep Rolling at Kansas: Kansas Cup Preview

After calling his shot and winning last Sunday’s Wurth 400 at Dover Motor Speedway, Denny Hamlin couldn’t ask for a better place to keep his hot streak going than Kansas Speedway. Hamlin is the defending winner of this weekend’s AdventHealth 400 (3 p.m. ET Sunday on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) at the 1.5-mile Kansas track.

Hamlin’s team, 23XI Racing which he co-owns with Michael Jordan, has been utterly dominant at Kansas in the Next Gen car era. Kurt Busch won there in spring 2022 before injuries ended his season. Then Bubba Wallace captured the fall 2022 race, followed by Hamlin’s victory last spring and Tyler Reddick’s playoff win last fall – giving 23XI Racing three of the last four Kansas winners.

The Toyota camp as a whole has been stout at Kansas too, winning seven of the last nine races there with Hamlin getting three of those triumphs and former teammate Kyle Busch one more.

“Kansas is where we show up with confidence,” said Wallace. “If everything goes right, we’ve got a really good shot at being in Victory Lane. Something clicks when we show up there.”

After boldly predicting his Dover win, Hamlin isn’t making any guarantees this week. But he absolutely expects to contend based on his team’s Kansas prowess and his current hot streak that has him tied with William Byron for most wins (3) this season.

“I expect to win every week,” Hamlin said. “There’s no reason I shouldn’t expect to win [at Kansas]…it’s been on the radar for a while.”

While Toyota has reigned lately at Kansas, Chevrolet driver Kyle Larson did win there in his 2021 championship season in the race before the Next Gen car debuted. But Ford is mired in a Kansas drought dating back to Joey Logano’s 2020 fall victory as the Blue Oval bunch looks to finally snap into win column this season.

Between powerhouses Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing, the two teams have split the last nine Kansas races evenly while combining to win nine of 11 races overall this year. With Hamlin’s fourth career Kansas victory last year, he tied Gordon for the track record.

All signs point to Hamlin, his 23XI team, and Toyota being the favorites again this weekend at a track that has treated them very well over the past couple seasons. But Hendrick’s Chevrolets and perhaps a rogue Ford led by Logano could have something to say about that latest Kansas kingdom.

My Pick: Bubba Wallace
