Jesse Love captured his first career NASCAR Xfinity Series victory in dramatic fashion on Saturday, surviving a double-overtime finish to take the checkered flag in the Ag-Pro 300 at Talladega Superspeedway.

The 19-year-old Californian edged Riley Herbst by just 0.141 seconds after a frantic final restart saw several drivers run out of fuel. Love’s win in the No. 2 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet made him only the seventh driver to score his maiden win at the 2.66-mile Talladega oval.

“Just a great group of guys and it’s been such a journey to get to this point,” an elated Love said. “I had PTSD flashbacks from Atlanta, but I love Talladega and the fans.”

Love was referring to the heartbreak of leading at Atlanta earlier this year only to run out of gas before the finish. He left nothing to chance at Talladega, winning Stage 1, leading 28 laps, and capitalizing when an overtime restart set up a frantic dash to the finish line.

His RCR teammate Austin Hill appeared poised to win after leading a race-high 41 laps, but contact from Parker Kligerman sent Hill’s car into the wall with two laps remaining in regulation. That triggered the first overtime and a multi-car incident that eliminated several frontrunners.

On the second overtime restart, Kligerman was involved in another wreck as various drivers began running out of fuel. Love lined up on the front row and surged ahead when the green waved, pulling away to an emotional first victory.

“I love the speedway and I love the fans,” Love reiterated. “It’s been a journey to get here.”

Herbst took second, his best result this season, followed by Anthony Alfredo, Leland Honeyman Jr., and Brennan Poole rounding out the top five. Ryan Sieg earned the $100,000 Dash 4 Cash bonus by finishing 17th.

The wild Talladega race showcased the unpredictability of superspeedway racing. Despite the late chaos, Love kept his focus and cashed in on an opportunity he admittedly thought may never come after Atlanta. His first win was certainly a memorable one at NASCAR’s biggest track.
