Kyle Busch further etched his name into the NASCAR record books on Friday night, capturing a dramatic victory in the SpeedyCash.com 250 at Texas Motor Speedway. The win was Busch’s sixth in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at the 1.5-mile Fort Worth track, tying Todd Bodine’s series record for most wins at a single venue.
The two-time Cup Series champion led a race-high 112 of 167 laps and held off a hard-charging Corey Heim by just 0.112 seconds to take the checkered flag. It was the fourth consecutive Truck Series win at Texas for the 37-year-old Busch, who has now won an unprecedented 20 races across NASCAR’s three national touring series at the high-banked oval.
“Great team, everybody here at Spire Motorsports,” said Busch. “They definitely kept me honest, I’ll give them that.”
Busch had to fend off repeated challenges over a rash of late-race restarts, particularly from Heim, who continues an impressive season with his seventh consecutive top-10 finish. But the veteran Busch managed to keep his No. 7 Chevrolet out front each time to claim his 66th career Truck Series victory.
“Corey kept us honest right there,” Busch said of the 21-year-old rising star. “He made it and got to my rear bumper getting into [turn] three and I just didn’t know which way to go.”
Nick Sanchez, Christian Eckes and Cup Series rookie Zane Smith rounded out the top five finishers in an event where the lead was swapped repeatedly among the frontrunners. Eckes assumed the Truck Series points lead by two markers over Heim.
The dramatic late battling added more luster to Busch’s record-tying performance at a venue he has simply dominated over his career. With six Truck wins, four Cup Series victories and 10 more in the Xfinity Series, the driver nicknamed “Rowdy” may need a new Texas moniker after reaching unparalleled heights at the Lone Star state’s premiere motorsports facility.
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series takes next weekend off before returning to action May 4 at Kansas Speedway.
