William Byron captured another milestone win for Hendrick Motorsports on Sunday, leading his teammates Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott to an unprecedented 1-2-3 finish for the organization at Martinsville Speedway in the Cook Out 400.
On the 40th anniversary weekend for Hendrick in the NASCAR Cup Series, Byron’s victory was the 29th for the team at the half-mile Martinsville oval – the most wins for any organization at a single NASCAR track. It was also the first time in history that a team has swept the podium positions at Martinsville.
Byron’s early pit strategy was the key, as crew chief Rudy Fugle called him in before the leaders to take on fresh tires. That allowed Byron to cycle into the lead and he controlled the latter stages of the race. An overtime restart didn’t faze the 26-year-old, as he pulled away from teammates Larson and Elliott over the final two laps.
“Just so proud of everyone at Hendrick Motorsports,” said Byron. “It’s pretty awesome – bad-ass to win at Martinsville.”
The historic 1-2-3 finish was a fitting celebration for Hendrick’s 40 years in NASCAR’s premier series. While team owner Rick Hendrick missed the event following knee surgery, Jeff Gordon was on hand to revel in the organization’s latest landmark accomplishment.
“How about that William Byron?” said Gordon. “Every time we have a milestone day or opportunity or moment, he steps up.”
