17-Year-Old Prodigy Connor Zilisch Storms to Truck Series Pole at COTA

Connor Zilisch announced his arrival in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in emphatic fashion, capturing the pole position for Saturday’s XPEL 225 at Circuit of The Americas in just his series debut. The 17-year-old prodigy from North Carolina blazed to the top spot in qualifying, laying down a blistering lap of 2 minutes, 11.983 seconds at 93.012 mph in the No. 7 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet.

Zilisch’s pole-winning speed was a staggering 0.722 seconds clear of veteran Corey Heim in second place, an eye-popping margin at a relentlessly challenging road course like COTA. His scintillating performance continued an incredible start to 2024 that has seen Zilisch score class wins at the Rolex 24 At Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring in IMSA competition.

Despite his tender age and relative inexperience in stock cars, Zilisch downplayed the significance of his otherworldly pole lap.

“I’m kind of blown away,” Zilisch admitted. “Gotta hand it all off to Spire Motorsports and the truck that they brought. We had a really fast Chevy today and made my job really easy.”

Zilisch credited months of preparation working with Chevrolet engineers and retired drivers like Josh Wise and Scott Speed in helping ready him for his NASCAR debut. The Trackhouse Racing development driver also sought help from a sports psychologist to manage the intense nerves that come with such heightened expectations.

“I get so nervous and amped up before races that I go out there and just not do my job and completely mess up,” Zilisch explained. “So that’s one thing that I’ve really had to work on the last two years is just not getting too amped up.”

With winds of change swirling through the Truck Series in 2024, Zilisch’s lightning-paced arrival may signal the dawning of a new era. Zilisch will split the season between Spire Motorsports and JR Motorsports, where he will make his Xfinity Series debut in the No. 88 Chevrolet.

After such a strong first impression at COTA, all eyes will be on the latest racing prodigy and whether Zilisch can continue defying expectations and rewriting the record books. Based on his early results, the future seems blindingly bright for the young phenom.
