The Formula 1 circus descends upon Melbourne this week for the third race of the 2024 season, the Australian Grand Prix. After two opening rounds in the Middle East, the championship battle heads to the temporary Albert Park Circuit for what could prove to be a pivotal early showdown.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has looked virtually unbeatable so far, sweeping to victory in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. The Dutchman extended his remarkable winning streak to 19 of 20 races dating back to last season.

However, Melbourne’s 3.3 mile semi-street circuit could offer Verstappen’s rivals their first real opportunity to strike back. The Albert Park layout has traditionally favored strong braking performance and high-speed cornering prowess over outright power. Mercedes and Ferrari are undoubtedly optimistic the relativey high-downforce nature of the track will play more to the strengths of their 2024 cars. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are hungry to end their respective title droughts after years of watching Verstappen dominate.

The main straight into turn one at Albert Park has produced many memorable moments and opening lap conflicts over the years. The tight turn 3/4 complex and high-speed section from turns 9 through 14 will be particularly challenging.

Changeable weather conditions are another wildcard, with on-and-off rain showers frequently disrupting sessions around the Albert Park lake area. Could we finally see an end to the Verstappen win streak if intermediate or wet tires are required?
