Max Verstappen continued his relentless charge in the 2024 Formula 1 season with a dominant victory at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah. The reigning world champion’s sublime performance was punctuated by several remarkable achievements and records.
Verstappen secured his 35th career pole position and led most of the day on his way to his 56th career victory. This marked the first time the Dutchman has won the opening two races of a season, as well as his 9th consecutive Grand Prix triumph dating back to last year.
The Red Bull driver also reached the 100-podium milestone, becoming the youngest in F1 history to achieve this feat at just 26 years old. His Saudi win extended his incredible streak as the championship points leader to 41 consecutive races.
Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez finished second, though his race was tainted by a 5-second penalty for an unsafe pit release. Charles Leclerc was able to bring home his Ferrari 3rd marking Ferrari’s second third place finish of the year.
Red Bull’s 1-2 finish marked the team’s 115th victory in Formula 1 and their second consecutive season starting with back-to-back 1-2 results in the opening two rounds.
The race was not without drama, as Kevin Magnussen collected 20 seconds worth of penalties – 10 for causing a collision and 10 for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. Meanwhile, debutant 18 year old Ollie Bearman impressed by finishing 7th for Ferrari.
A Safety Car was deployed on lap 7 after Lance Stroll crashed into the barriers, with four drivers staying out including Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, Nico Hulkenberg, and Zhou Guanyu.
However, Red Bull’s pace appeared unmatched throughout the weekend, as the paddock heads to Australia, all eyes remain on the unstoppable Verstappen juggernaut and whether any team can threaten Red Bull’s early grip on the 2024 season.
