Chandler Smith found himself in the right place at the right time to secure his second career NASCAR Xfinity Series victory in Saturday’s Call 811.com Every Dig. Every Time. 200 at Phoenix Raceway.
Smith was running second when leader Justin Allgaier suffered a devastating blown left rear tire with just five laps remaining in regulation. Allgaier’s No. 7 Chevrolet smashed into the outside wall, ending his dominating day.
That set up an overtime restart, which Smith took full advantage of in his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. He pulled away to a 0.365-second win over Sunoco Rookie Jesse Love and teammate Sheldon Creed.
“We just lacked a little bit on the 7 (Allgaier),” admitted Smith. “I hate that happened to him – he had that in the bag. I’m so proud of everybody at Joe Gibbs Racing. It’s good finally to get this first win off our back.”
Allgaier was the class of the field, leading 52 laps and holding a near three-second advantage when his tire went down on the frontstretch approaching Turn 1 on lap 195.
“Going through the dogleg, I felt it come apart like I ran something over, and at that point, you’re just a passenger,” a dejected Allgaier said. “I just hate it that we tore up a race car.”
Smith led a race-high 88 laps himself, including winning the opening 45-lap Stage. Cole Custer dominated Stage 2 but faded late with a loose racecar, ending up fifth.
The event was slowed by six caution periods for 38 laps, including one on lap 137 that set the chain of events in motion. Contact between Smith and John Hunter Nemechek triggered a multi-car pileup that collected 11 cars.
Nemechek, Sam Mayer, Hailie Deegan, Parker Retzlaff, and Jeb Burton were among those forced to retire with significant damage.
When the race finally went green for the final stint on lap 152, Allgaier checked out easily until his fateful flat tire, allowing Smith to steal an unexpected victory in overtime.
Austin Hill finished fourth, with defending Xfinity champion Custer rounding out the top five ahead of rookie Shane van Gisbergen.
